Frequently Asked Questions
Question: What is tools in transit cover?
The insurance covers replacement or the repair of your tools or equipment that has been lost, stolen, destroyed, or damaged while being loaded in or upon, carried by, temporarily housed in or upon, or being unloaded from your vehicle or locked building or storage unit.

Question: Is it worth having tool insurance?
Ultimately, the key benefit of tools insurance is peace of mind. Knowing you have insurance allows you to work with confidence, secure in the knowledge that if the unexpected happens, you can: Replace your tools quickly: Insurance payouts allow for rapid tool replacement, minimising downtime.

Question: Do you need receipts for tool insurance?
Yes, Yes, Yes. You won't get anywhere claiming on a tools insurance policy without the receipts for the lost, damaged or stolen items. Whenever you purchase a new tool, retain the receipt (whether a physical copy or e-receipt) and file them in a safe place.

Question: Can I claim for my stolen laptop under my tools in transit policy?
Sorry, UK Sure tools in transit insurance policies do not cover laptops. Laptops are excluded from our standard tool insurance coverage. You'll need separate insurance for laptops, potentially through a dedicated gadget insurance policy or by adding business equipment cover to your existing insurance.

Question: What does tool insurance cover?
Tool insurance covers the cost of replacing your tools if they're lost or damaged, for example, due to fire, flooding, or theft. Tools that could be included are: Handheld tools (hammers, screwdrivers, saws, pliers), Power tools (drills, sanders, angle grinders, nail guns), etc.

Question: Am I legally required to have tools insurance?
Unlike employers’ liability insurance, you are not legally required to have insurance specifically for your tools. However, while it's not a legal obligation, tool insurance is widely considered to be an essential part of a sound business setup for anyone who relies on tools for their income.

Question: Why is tool insurance considered such an essential part of a business setup?
Even if you are incredibly careful, unforeseen events can occur that put your tools at risk. Consider these potential scenarios:
-
Theft from vehicles and worksites: Tools can be stolen from your van, even if it's locked, or from a job site, despite security measures.
-
Accidents and damage: Tools can be damaged in workplace accidents, vehicle collisions, or by vandalism.
-
Natural disasters: Events like floods or storms can render your tools unusable.

Question: How much tools insurance coverage do I need, and how much will it cost?
The amount of cover you need is directly linked to the total value of your tools. To determine this:
-
Create a detailed inventory: List all your portable powered and non-powered hand tools, including employee tools and hired/leased equipment.
-
Document tool values: Compile receipts, invoices, or other proof of purchase for your tools to help establish their value.
-
Calculate total replacement cost: Work out the current cost to replace all the tools in your inventory at today's prices. This is the amount of cover you should aim for.
