What is Motorbike Insurance?
Motorbike insurance provides financial protection if your bike is involved in an accident, suffers damage, or is stolen. It’s also a legal requirement. Riding a motorcycle in the UK without insurance is a criminal offense.

The only time you don’t need motorbike insurance is if you’ve declared that your bike is off the road to the DVLA.

What level of cover do I need?
You need to decide what level of cover you need. The more coverage you have, the more protection you have, but providers charge more money for more coverage.

The best motorbike insurance for you is the policy that gives you the coverage you need at the cheapest price.

You can choose from three types of motorcycle or moped insurance coverage:
Third-party only - Covers injury to others and damage to their property.
Third-party, fire, and theft - Cover injury to others and damage to their property. It also covers theft of your bike and fire damage to your bike.
Fully comprehensive - Covers all of the above, plus damage to your bike through accident or vandalism.

Extras available
Trips abroad - Cover for riding your bike abroad, but the length of time you’re covered can vary
Helmets and clothing - Most motorbike policies include the option to add cover for accessories, but you might have to pay extra.
UK breakdown - This gives you roadside assistance if your bike breaks down while on the road.
Pillion passengers - Some insurers let you take a passenger

Specialist Motorbike Insurance
Consider whether you need a specialist motorbike insurance policy. This kind of cover can cost more, depending on what it offers.
Some of the specialist types of bike insurance include:
Scooter or moped insurance - If you’re under 25 and it’s your first bike, cheap moped insurance can be hard to find
Sports bike insurance - This can be expensive because it’s for high-performance bikes
Supermoto insurance - A lightweight model with a smaller engine is cheaper to insure
Classic motorcycle insurance - Classic bikes can be worth a lot, but they’re usually well looked after and not used much, so insuring them isn’t too expensive
Multi-bike insurance - If you have several bikes, this can be a cost-effective way to insure them
How can I get cheaper motorcycle insurance?
Although you can buy your affordable bike insurance policy with UK Sure, its wise to take into consideration the following:
-
Owners club and forum membership (up to 15% off)
-
Limited mileage policies
-
Adding extra security features to your bike
-
Keeping your bike in a garage
-
Experience riding on the roads

Frequently Asked Questions
What information is required to obtain an insurance quote?
To get an insurance quote, you'll need to provide personal details like your name and address, with information about your motorcycle, such as its make and model, estimated value, and purchase date. Additionally, we will require information about your riding or driving experience, any past convictions or accidents, and the security features of your bike.
What is a No Claims Bonus?
Typically, your current insurer's renewal letter will serve as proof of your no status. If it doesn't, you can reach out to your previous insurer and ask them to provide it for you.
I have a custom or modified bike – am I still eligible for coverage?
Absolutely! We provide coverage for all kinds of bikes, including those that are fully custom or modified.
I'm 17; can you provide insurance for me?
Regardless of whether you're 16 and have just completed CBT or have years of riding experience, we can provide coverage for you. As a new rider, you may notice that your insurance premiums are on the higher side. Give us a call, and we'll strive to beat any quote you've received so far.
Can I use my insurance to ride a different bike?
This is contingent on your insurance policy. While some policies may provide coverage for riding other bikes, it is likely to be third-party-only coverage instead of fully comprehensive. This means that if the bike gets damaged, you won't be able to file a claim. Be sure to review your insurance certificate for details.
Can I ride my motorbike in Europe?
Absolutely! All of our standard motorbike insurance policies provide coverage for up to 90 days in European Commission countries. If you require coverage for a longer duration or plan to travel outside the EU, please reach out to us, and we may be able to assist you.
Can I add a driver to my impounded vehicle policy?
Adding a named, or additional, driver to an impound insurance policy is a rare and often complex affair. However, if you call us, UK Sure can arrange cover in these circumstances.
Can I take out an impounded vehicle policy if I am a provisional licence holder?
Yes. Our Impound Release insurance is available for all UK, EU, provisional and International licence holders.
Am I able to purchase comprehensive insurance to release my impounded vehicle?
No, our Impound Release policy provides you with 30 days of Third Party Only Cover. If you require comprehensive cover, you’ll need to purchase a new policy once your vehicle has been released.
Motorbike Insurance
Can I insure my motorbike before passing my test?
Yes, you can insure your motorbike before passing your test. If you intend to use the bike for your test, consider obtaining learner rider insurance. If not, a laid-up insurance policy can safeguard your vehicle against fire and theft while it remains unused.
Is motorcycle insurance mandatory in the UK?
If you plan to ride your motorcycle on public roads in the UK, having motorbike insurance is a legal requirement. Riding without coverage is against the law and could result in points on your licence.
Is motorbike insurance less expensive with a full licence?
Motorcycle insurance may be more affordable once you obtain a full licence, but this also depends on factors like upgrading to a more powerful bike or adding a pillion cover. However, having a full motorcycle licence indicates safe riding, which can help lower your premiums.
