Is learner driver insurance right for you?

Can I drive the car by myself?
No.
This policy only covers the learner driver whilst they are being supervised to learn to drive and the supervisor in the passenger seat is aged 25 or over, has held a full UK Driving Licence for 3 years or more, must be a UK resident for a minimum of 2 years, and does not have a DR-coded motoring conviction (for Drink or Drugs offenses) endorsed on their driving license within the past 5 years.

Can I take out a policy if I am over 21?
Sorry no.

Can more than one learner driver be insured on the same car?
The policy only covers you as the named driver. However, each driver can have their policy and practice in the same car.

What happens if I turn 22 during the period of cover?
Provided you are 21 or under at the inception of the cover then that is acceptable.

Will you insure me if I have convictions?
Sorry no.

Will you insure me if I have had a previous accident or claim?
Sorry no.

Will you insure me if I have a previous or pending criminal conviction?
Sorry no.

Will you insure me if I have modified the vehicle in any way (including wheels, Suspension, engine, or bodywork)?

Sorry no.

What is the Excess if I need to make a claim?
You will need to pay the first £250 towards any claim.

Can I take out insurance cover if I am under 17?
No. We only provide insurance cover for learner drivers aged between 17 – 21.

What happens when I pass my driving test?
Your learner driver policy will stop immediately. You will therefore need to arrange your motor insurance. This policy does extend to cover the person supervising you to drive the insured vehicle for a specific journey after you have completed your practical driving test.

The parents are the owners of the vehicle that I’m learning to drive in. Do my parents need their insurance on the vehicle?
If the learner driver is not the registered owner and keeper of the insured vehicle, and the parents are! Then the parents must have their valid motor insurance policy in force.

How long do I have to have been a resident in the UK to take cover?
You must have been a resident in the UK for at least 5 years to be eligible for the Learner Driver cover.

Learner driver insurance. What is it?

  • Learner driver car insurance is a specialized policy created just for learner drivers. You’d probably worked out that much from the name alone though. A learner driver insurance policy helps learners get behind the wheel at a key moment in their driving journey.

  • Use a learner driver car insurance policy to practice, practice, practice or simply to take your test in a car you’re familiar with. Many choose to use learner driver insurance to either practice away from their lessons or simply learn to drive in their parent’s car.

  • You can even use it to take your driving test in your car.

  • Temporary learner driver insurance gives you the freedom not to be tied into a long-term insurance policy when you’re just a learner.

  • Drive your friend or family member’s car with fully comprehensive car insurance. Don’t put their no-claims discount at risk.

How Much Does Learner Driver Insurance Cost?

Learner driver insurance costs do differ depending on a few factors. But with a temporary learner insurance cover you can be confident that you’re getting a great deal compared to being added to an annual policy.

By taking out temporary learner insurance, you will save money and you can also ensure you are protecting the car owner’s no-claims discount.

Who needs Temporary Car Insurance?

Long-term annual policies are often pricey and inflexible, meaning they’re not the best fit for learner drivers. Our short-term policies are great for learners looking to:

  • Get some more practice before their test.

  • Borrow a friend or family member’s car.

  • Take their test in a friend or family member’s car.

  • Protect the car owner’s no-claims discount.
