What is motorhome insurance?
Motorhome insurance is a type of motor cover that's specific to motorhomes and campervans. This type of insurance can cover your vehicle, you, and your passengers for damage, accidents, and theft. Just like car insurance, motorhome insurance is a legal requirement.
Campervan insurance varies greatly depending on the type of campervan you have, the classification of the van, how often you use it if you live in it, and many other factors.

Both campervans and motorhomes are self-contained units that allow you to travel and sleep comfortably. Some differences affect your insurance.

A campervan is small and has basic sleeping, washing, and cooking provisions. Many people insure these under van or car insurance and miss out on insurance benefits.

A motorhome’s use is to provide transportation and self-contained living accommodations. They come in a variety of sizes including coach-built, self-built, and A-Class. The motorhome has areas that are clearly defined in purpose such as sleeping, living, and driving, and contains permanent sinks and cupboards.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) defines motorhomes as motor caravans. They require a specialist insurance policy.

What type of insurance do I need?
It depends on your needs. There are three main types of insurance for motorhomes:

Third-party – the minimum level of cover you’ll need to drive on UK roads. This will only cover the cost of compensating other people for injury or damage you cause to them or their vehicle.

Third-party, fire, and theft – this offers the same level of cover as third-party but also offers cover if your motorhome is stolen, damaged, or destroyed by fire.

Fully comprehensive – this includes cover for all of the above, but could also cover your motorhome if it’s damaged or destroyed by an event that’s your fault.
The following might also come as standard with some motorhome policies:
Personal belongings cover – to protect any belongings you keep in your motorhome or camper.
Awning cover – to cover you for damage to an awning because of a storm.
Windscreen cover – to cover the cost of chips or cracks to your windscreen.

There are also specialist motorhome policies that offer extended cover – for European road trips, for example. Although some providers may offer this as an add-on to a policy for an extra cost.

Question: Can I drive a motorhome with a car license in UK?
Yes. You can drive a motorhome (including campervans) on a Category B car licence as long as it weighs fewer than 3,500kg. This makes it easy for those with a standard car licence to drive motorhomes without needing additional qualifications. That still leaves you with a great choice of models to choose from.

Question: What is the biggest motorhome you can drive on a car licence in the UK?
If the motorhome or campervan has a Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) below 3.5 tonnes, then yes, you can drive it with a regular (category B) driving licence in the UK. If, however, the MAM is above 3.5 tonnes, additional licensing may be required to legally drive the vehicle.

Question: Can you sleep in a motorhome on a public road in the UK?
Despite there being no specific laws that prohibit you sleeping in your home on wheels on a road in the UK, it generally isn't allowed. Local authorities tend to own roads and highways, and they each have their own set of regulations.

Question: Can you park up anywhere in a motorhome in the UK?
In short, no. If you want to park up somewhere off the beaten track – and not in a caravan or motorhome park – you need to be careful whose land you end up on. Land in Britain is typically owned by someone.

Question: Can I live in a motorhome on my own land in the UK?
Different areas in the UK have different rules and regulations when it comes to living in a motorhome on your own land. While there are no explicit national laws prohibiting this practice, it's important to check with your local council to find out what the specific policies are for your area.​

Question: What are the rules for motorhomes in the UK?
To drive a motorhome with a MAM of between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes, you need a category C1 licence. To drive a motorhome with a MAM of over 7.5 tonnes, you need a category C licence. Check which vehicles you can drive and the licence and age requirements for towing.​

Question: What is the best speed to drive a motorhome?
I personally drive my motorhome at a speed of about 65MPH. I just set the cruise and let it go. Most people “in the know” on this recommend driving between 60mph and 65 mph. If you're driving a towable, you may want to go ever slower.
