Is your van stuck in a Police Compound?

There can be many reasons why your van has been impounded in a police compound. Maybe you didn’t know your policy had expired or your direct debit failed. Was your van insured, but not for the correct use? Perhaps you thought your insurance policy allowed you to drive another van or someone else used your van, thinking they were insured.

Let us help.

We can organise documentation quickly, and the policy itself lasts for 30 days, so there’s no need to sit this one out.

Our team can help you take the first steps to getting your vehicle back.

Our short-period Impounded van Insurance can assist you in the release of your impounded van from a police compound. When you collect your van from the compound, you must produce documentation to the compound which includes insurance documentation.

Specifically designed for the release of impounded vehicles (car or van)

  • This is a 30-day policy specifically for releasing an impounded van from the compound.

  • The cover is Third Party Only.

  • The necessary documentation to release your impounded van from the compound will be emailed to you as soon as we have all the information and payment. Don’t pay more compound storage fees than you have to!

  • We accept Full UK Licence, Provisional Licence, International Licence or European Licence.

  • Unfortunately, we are unable to accept drivers under the age of 24.

Why do the Police seize vehicles?

Under section 165A of the Road Traffic Act 1988, the Police have the power to seize any vehicle that is being driven without a valid insurance policy or where the driver does not hold a valid driving licence. If the driver has committed the offence or the Police are unable to establish insurance cover being in place at the roadside, the vehicle will be seized and taken to the impound, where you will be charged a release fee plus daily storage charges until the vehicle is collected.

There is a strict time limit of 14 days as explained in the S.165 notice that will be handed to you at the roadside. After this date, there is a risk that your vehicle could be crushed.

For Example:

  • Policyholders who thought their policy had auto-renewed.

  • Vehicles that were insured but for the incorrect use.

  • Drivers who thought they had the Driving Other Cars extension.

  • Policyholders who had allowed someone else to use their vehicle, thinking they had insurance in place or a full current driving licence.

Feqruently Asked Questions

Can I take out impound release insurance for less than 30 days?

Unfortunately not. It is a requirement by law that you have a minimum of 30 days of insurance cover to release an impounded vehicle. We only provide Impound Release Insurance on a Third Party Only Cover basis for a minimum of 30 days.

Can I get a refund for the days I don’t need the impound insurance?

No, unfortunately, as you need to prove that your vehicle is insured for a minimum of 30 days to be able to release your vehicle, all of our Impound Release Insurance policies are non-refundable.

Can I still take out a temporary insurance policy with a pending conviction for no insurance?

Yes, as long as your licence has not been suspended, we can still provide you with cover and will take into consideration that there may be a pending conviction for driving with no insurance.

How will I receive my certificate of insurance?

Your certificate will immediately be sent to the email address you provided when buying the policy. You can then show this to the impound when releasing your vehicle.

Can I use UK Sure Impound Release Insurance to release my car on the same day?

Yes, you can choose instant cover when you purchase your policy and we will send your documents to your email address immediately.

Can I add a driver to my impounded vehicle policy?

Unfortunately, not.  Policies must only be in the name of the vehicle owner, or the policyholder must hold a current lease in their name for the impounded vehicle.

Can I take out an impounded vehicle policy if I am a provisional licence holder?

Yes. Our Impound Release insurance is available for all UK, EU, provisional and International licence holders.

Am I able to purchase comprehensive insurance to release my impounded vehicle?

No, our Impound Release policy provides you with 30 days of Third Party Only Cover. If you require comprehensive cover, you’ll need to purchase a new policy once your vehicle has been released.

What happens if the authorities don’t release my vehicle?

UK Sure/GoShorty will provide you with valid insurance based on the information you provide us with to allow for the release of your vehicle from an impound, however valid insurance won’t guarantee your vehicle’s release. If the authority in possession of the insured vehicle is not willing to release the vehicle to you for any reason, you’ll need to resolve this with them directly. UK Sure/GoShorty are not responsible for the actions of any impound, nor do we have any authority over them and your policy cannot be amended once cover has been purchased, so please ensure you have read and understand all of the terms and conditions of your policy before you purchase.

Can I drive other vehicles?

No. The only vehicle you will be covered to drive is the one on your policy, but you can purchase another policy from us if you need cover on another vehicle.

Vehicles fitted with manufacturer-specified optional extras that are fitted at the time of manufacture are acceptable. Vehicles modified to cater for a disabled driver, or a disabled passenger are acceptable. All other modifications (cosmetic or performance-related) are not acceptable.
