Before you start practising on public roads with a provisional licence, you need the right insurance in place. Provisional licence insurance, also known as learner driver insurance, is designed specifically for people who have not yet passed their practical driving test.
It can provide temporary cover while you gain supervised driving experience in an eligible vehicle, helping you build confidence outside formal driving lessons.
At UK Sure, we offer learner driver insurance for eligible provisional licence holders aged 17 to 21, with temporary cover available from one hour up to 24 weeks.
What Is Provisional Licence Insurance?
Provisional licence insurance is motor insurance for learner drivers.
It is designed to cover you while you practise driving before passing your test, provided you meet the policy conditions and are properly supervised.
This type of cover is different from standard annual car insurance because it is specifically intended for learners and can often be arranged for a shorter period. That makes it useful if you only need cover while practising over a few days, weekends or several weeks.
When Do Learner Drivers Need Insurance?
You need suitable insurance whenever you drive on a public road, even if you are only practising for a short time.
Driving lessons with an approved instructor will usually be covered by the instructor’s insurance. However, if you practise privately in another vehicle, you must make sure suitable insurance is in place before you drive.
You should also check that the vehicle itself is properly insured, taxed, roadworthy and has a valid MOT where required.
Who Can Get Learner Driver Insurance?
Eligibility depends on the insurer and policy.
UK Sure’s current learner driver cover is available to eligible drivers aged 17 to 21 with a valid UK provisional driving licence. Other criteria may also apply, including residency, driving history, penalty points, previous claims and the type of vehicle being insured.
The car must also meet certain requirements. This can include having an existing underlying motor insurance policy, meeting age and value limits, and being suitable for private use.
Because eligibility can vary, it is important to check the full policy terms before purchasing cover.
Who Can Supervise a Learner Driver?
Learner drivers must be supervised when practising on public roads.
In Great Britain, the supervising driver must generally be at least 21 years old, be qualified to drive the type of vehicle being used and have held a full licence for at least three years.
Insurers can apply stricter requirements. Under UK Sure’s current learner driver policy, the supervising driver must be at least 25, have held a full UK driving licence for at least three years and meet the insurer’s other eligibility conditions.
The supervisor must sit in the front passenger seat and be in a position to properly supervise the learner throughout the journey.
What Rules Must Learner Drivers Follow?
Holding insurance does not remove the other legal requirements that apply to learner drivers.
You must display L plates clearly on the front and rear of the vehicle, or D plates where permitted in Wales.
You must also be accompanied by an eligible supervising driver and follow the same road traffic laws as any other driver.
Learner drivers cannot practise on motorways with friends or family. Motorway lessons are only allowed in England, Scotland and Wales when accompanied by an approved driving instructor in a vehicle fitted with dual controls.
These rules apply every time you practise, regardless of how short the journey is.
How Long Can Provisional Licence Insurance Last?
One of the main benefits of learner driver insurance is flexibility.
At UK Sure, temporary learner driver cover can be arranged from one hour up to 24 weeks, subject to eligibility.
That can be useful if you want:
A few extra hours of practice before a lesson
Weekend driving practice
Regular supervised practice before your test
Cover during school, college or university holidays
Short-term cover while preparing for an upcoming test date
The right duration depends on how often you expect to practise and how soon you plan to take your test.
What Should You Check Before Buying Learner Driver Insurance?
Before taking out cover, make sure both you and the vehicle meet the insurer’s requirements.
Check the policy carefully for:
Driver age limits
Vehicle age and value restrictions
Supervisor requirements
Permitted vehicle use
Cover duration
Excesses
Claims conditions
Any exclusions
You should also confirm exactly when the cover begins and ends.
Temporary policies are often designed around specific start and finish times, so it is important not to drive outside the insured period.
What Happens When You Pass Your Driving Test?
Passing your practical driving test changes your insurance requirements immediately.
Learner driver insurance is designed for provisional licence holders, so you should not assume your existing policy will continue once you become a full licence holder.
Before driving independently after passing your test, you must arrange insurance that specifically covers you as a qualified driver.
This is an important step because driving without valid insurance can result in serious penalties, including fines, penalty points and potentially having the vehicle seized.
Is Temporary Learner Driver Insurance Worth Considering?
Temporary cover can be useful if you only need insurance for private practice before your test.
Rather than committing to a full annual policy as a learner, you can arrange cover for the period you expect to use.
It can also make it easier to fit extra driving practice around your lessons, helping you gain experience of different roads, traffic conditions and manoeuvres before your practical test.
The most important thing is to choose the kind of cover that matches how, when and where you will practise.
