Can a learner driver get impound insurance?
Yes, learner drivers can get impound insurance to release a seized vehicle, but there are strict rules. UK Sure Specialist short-term policies (typically lasting 30 days) are available to help you get your car back, but you cannot retrieve or drive the vehicle yourself.
You must be accompanied by a fully licensed driver who is typically over 21 (sometimes 25) and has held a full driving licence for at least 3 years.
Vehicle Documentation: You will need your police seizure notice, provisional driving license, proof of vehicle ownership (V5C), valid MOT (if applicable), impound insurance certificate, and a supervisor.
Do police accept provisional licence impound insurance?
Yes, police compounds do accept specialist provisional licence holders' impound insurance.
Impound Clause: The certificate of insurance must specifically state that it permits the release of an impounded vehicle.
According to Met Police: Since you are driving on a provisional licence, you will generally be required to nominate and name a fully qualified, licensed driver on the policy who meets the age and experience requirements to legally drive the car out of the pound. Therefore in this instance, please consider a named driver impound insurance or check with the police first.
